Mum helps Tara wash her hands with soap while Kabir dries his hands, with a clean bowl ready and Pip on a separate windowsill.

Tara opened her pretend Kitchen Club. Kabir brought a bowl, and Pip wore a paper chef’s hat. “First, clean hands!” said Tara. Grown-up: this is screen play. For real food, choose suitable fruit, wash and prepare small pieces, and handle all knives and heat yourself.

Talk together: Say “wash”. What do we do before handling food?

Mum rinses fruit under clean running water while Tara and Kabir watch and Pip sits on a separate windowsill.

Mum brought fruit to the clean worktop. She washed it in clean running water before preparing it. Pip watched the splashes from his picture perch. “The fruit has a shower before its bowl party!”

Talk together: Say “fruit”. Tell Pip what Mum uses to rinse it.

Mum prepares small fruit pieces while Tara and Kabir wait away from the knife, with two clean bowls ready.

Mum prepared small fruit pieces with clean tools. Tara and Kabir waited away from her knife. “That is the grown-up’s job,” said Tara. Pip counted the empty bowls: “One, two—one for each of you!”

Talk together: Say “bowl”. Who prepares the real fruit pieces?
