Snoozo and Zippy disagree over wooden blocks while keeping their paws safely to themselves.

Snoozo wanted a block bridge. Zippy wanted a block shop. She held a yellow block that both wanted. “My bridge needs it!” “My shop needs it!” Their voices grew louder. Snoozo noticed his shoulders tightening. He wanted to snatch the block, but kept his hands close to himself. The bridge could wait.

Talk together: What clues tell Snoozo that a pause might help? Try “My shoulders feel tight. I need help.”

Dad Moss models a calm pause while Snoozo holds a smooth grey pebble.

Dad Moss came close. “Anger can be here. Hitting cannot. I’ll help keep you both safe.” He showed Snoozo a smooth pebble. “Would a reminder help?” Snoozo held it. “Pause before I act?” “Yes. The pebble doesn’t remove feelings. It can remind us to stop our hands and ask for support.”

Talk together: Pretend your palm holds a pause pebble. Say “Pause. Safe hands. Please help.” An imaginary pebble is all you need.

Snoozo sits quietly with his pause pebble on the porch beside Dad Moss.

Snoozo chose the quiet porch. Dad sat beside him while Snoozo felt the pebble’s smooth edge. He breathed at an easy pace and watched the leaves nearby. His shoulders loosened a little. “Still cross?” Dad asked. “A bit.” “We can stay longer.” This was a supported pause, with someone to listen.

Talk together: Choose a pretend pause: sit with someone, watch a leaf or take an easy breath. What would you ask a grown-up?
