Snoozo, Zippy, their parents and grandparents gather as Dad places a small basil pot inside a decorative blue bowl.

Grandma Blossom brought a young basil plant to Drowsy Jungle. Dad Moss put its small pot inside a pretty blue bowl. Mum Fern found the care label. Grandpa Oak and Zippy made a sign: FAMILY GARDEN. Snoozo settled his moon cushion nearby. “Assistant garden watcher, ready!”

Talk together: Find the plant’s pot inside the blue bowl. What questions would you ask before caring for a new plant? Try “What does it need?”

Mum lifts the basil pot to reveal water collected in the blue bowl while Grandma asks the family to pause.

Zippy had already watered. Snoozo gave it another drink. Grandpa nearly added a third. “Wait,” said Grandma. “Does it need more?” Mum lifted the inner pot. Water sat in the blue bowl. “Oops,” said Dad. “Our pretty planter has become a paddling pool.”

Talk together: What clue tells the family to pause? Explain why three kind helpers can still give too much water if they do not check together.

Mum shows Snoozo the drainage holes while Dad empties the blue bowl and Grandpa shows a drawing of hidden roots.

Mum showed the holes under the inner pot. “Drainage holes let extra water out. Roots take up water from the soil, but they need air too. We shouldn’t leave this pot standing in water.” Dad emptied the bowl. Grandpa drew roots underground. “A hidden drinking team!” said Snoozo.

Talk together: Draw a simple plant with roots below the soil. Point to where extra water leaves the pot. Grown-up: handle lifting, tools and any work needed to make drainage holes.
