Grandma opens a discovery basket containing a red leaf, bell, orange and soft cloth beside a human teaching model.

Grandma Blossom opened a treasure basket: a red leaf, a little bell, an orange and a soft cloth. Grandpa Oak brought Sunny, their clothed human teaching model. Mum Fern, Dad Moss and Zippy joined Snoozo. “We koalas are exploring human bodies,” said Grandma. “Today’s clues are senses!” Snoozo looked inside. “Does the basket contain a nap?”

Talk together: Predict which sense can help notice a red leaf. Use the pictures or imagine the basket; real objects are optional.

The koala family compares seeing a red leaf with hearing a gentle bell using eyes and ears on the human model.

Zippy studied the leaf’s shape with her eyes. Dad rang the bell softly: ding! Grandpa pointed to Sunny’s ears. “Hearing brings sound clues. Sight brings colour and shape clues.” Snoozo drew an eye and an ear in his notebook. “Different helpers, different clues!” “People experience senses in different ways,” Mum added. “Watching, listening or imagining all count.”

Talk together: Compare the leaf clue and the bell clue. Explain which is about sight and which is about hearing. No need to close your eyes.

Mum holds a cut orange beside Sunny the human puppet, with Grandma and Snoozo looking on.

Mum peeled the orange. “A nose helps detect smells. Taste buds on the tongue help detect tastes.” Dad prepared a suitable snack for anyone who wanted one. “Smell and taste can work together,” said Grandma. Snoozo chose to imagine a juicy orange instead. Grandpa drew a nose and a tongue. “A drawing can be a clue too!”

Talk together: Match smell to nose and taste to tongue. Imagine both clues. For any real tasting, a grown-up chooses safe, suitable food; tasting is optional.
