Snoozo and Zippy find four different odd socks in the laundry basket.

Four odd socks waited in the laundry basket. Red stripes. Yellow spots. Plain blue. Long green. “Puppets!” said Snoozo. He put the red sock on his paw. Zippy chose the yellow one.

Talk together: Point to two different socks. Name their colours, or let your child choose a favourite by pointing.

Snoozo thinks the sock puppets need to match.

“My puppet is having a parade,” Snoozo said. “Can mine come?” asked Zippy. Snoozo studied its spots. “But parade socks should match.” He looked in the basket for another sock with red stripes.

Talk together: How do you think Zippy feels about the matching rule? Could a spotted sock march too?

Snoozo notices that his matching rule has left Zippy out.

There was no matching sock. Zippy lowered her puppet. The red puppet stood alone. Snoozo looked at the empty parade, then at his sister. A perfect match would not make much of a friend.

Talk together: Point to the lonely puppet. What could Snoozo say to welcome Zippy back?
