Zippy wants a running race, but Snoozo would like a slower game.

“Ready, steady, GO!” cried Zippy on the jungle path. She wanted a running race. Snoozo looked at the faraway finish leaf. “Could we try small steps?” But Zippy had already zoomed away.

Talk together: Move two fingers fast, then slowly. Say “Fast” and “Slow.” Which pace does each child want?

Page 2

Zippy reaches the finish alone while Snoozo feels left behind.

Zippy reached the finish first. There was nobody to cheer with. Snoozo was still halfway along the path. His shoulders drooped. “This game is not fun for me,” he said when she came back.

Talk together: How does each child feel now? A child may enjoy a game at a different pace from someone else.

Snoozo suggests a race with tiny steps and Zippy listens.

They sat on a low log. “I like racing,” said Zippy. “I like playing with you,” said Snoozo. He made tiny finger steps on his knee. “What about a race for our funniest little steps?”

Talk together: Try a funny finger step on your lap. What rule could make a game enjoyable for both children?
