Snoozo and Zippy wait while Mum prepares their snack.

Mum was preparing fruit for the family snack. “It needs a little more time,” she said. Snoozo sat with his plate. Zippy sat with hers. Their tummies were ready before the fruit was.

Talk together: What are the children waiting for? Say “Not ready yet” in a gentle voice.

Watching the empty plates makes the wait feel longer.

Snoozo watched his empty plate. He watched it some more. It stayed wonderfully empty. Zippy tapped the table. “Is it ready now?” Waiting felt longer when there was nothing else to notice.

Talk together: How does waiting feel? Acknowledge the feeling, then wonder what the children might do while they wait.

The children help Dad set the table while they wait.

Dad brought some napkins. “Could you help me?” Snoozo put one beside each plate. Zippy added cups. Soon the table was ready. “We cannot hurry the fruit,” said Snoozo, “but we can help here.”

Talk together: Mime setting a table. What is one small helpful thing you can do while something else gets ready?
