Zippy opens a pretend shop with three fallen leaves.

Zippy opened a leaf shop on a low stump. One broad leaf. One narrow leaf. One little leaf. “Three lovely leaves!” she called. Snoozo stopped. That broad one looked exactly like a hat.

Talk together: Count the three leaves. Point to the one you would choose for a pretend hat.

Snoozo takes the big leaf before asking.

Snoozo picked up the broad leaf. “Perfect!” Zippy’s ears stiffened. “Wait! I was going to try that one.” Snoozo stopped. His exciting new hat had made the shopkeeper look very unhappy.

Talk together: What could Snoozo do before taking the leaf? Try asking “May I use it?”

Page 3

Snoozo puts the leaf back and asks politely for a turn.

He put the leaf back. “Sorry. I should have asked. May I have a turn after you?” Zippy relaxed. “Yes. First my hat turn, then yours.” The leaf shop felt friendly again.

Talk together: Use two fingers for first and next. Say “Your turn, then my turn.”
