Snoozo hugs his yellow moon cushion beside Zippy while Grandpa, Mum, Dad and Grandma gather with paper lanterns in the warm treehouse.

The treehouse lanterns were sleepy. Grandma Blossom, Grandpa Oak, Mum Fern, Dad Moss and Zippy brought letters to wake them. Snoozo hugged his moon cushion. “Can a letter yawn?” Mum smiled. “Letters have names. Let’s meet A!” A little lantern twinkled.

Talk together: Grown-up: read this page and every play instruction aloud. Say the letter name A. Your child can point, tap, watch or repeat; reading is not required. Explore other lanterns together whenever you like.

Snoozo and Zippy hold green and coral cards beside an apple and golden ball while Grandpa holds a glowing paper lantern.

Grandpa set an apple and a ball beside the lantern. Snoozo and Zippy held their letter cards: A beside a, then B beside b. “Two shapes for the same letter,” said Grandpa. Snoozo looked at the ball. “Does little b get a little bounce?” “Any size bounce!” Grandpa laughed.

Talk together: Say B’s letter name, then point to B and b. Tell your child these are uppercase and lowercase forms of the same letter. Read the choices aloud; use the ball as a picture clue, not a test of reading.

Zippy held up Grandma’s cat puppet. “Meow!” Snoozo found a curved letter. “C!” “That is its name,” said Mum. “In cat, C helps show the first sound.” The puppet bowed. Zippy giggled. “A polite cat with a curly clue!” Snoozo hugged his cushion and watched it wave.

Talk together: Find C together. Model its letter name separately from the first sound /k/ in cat. Other words can use C differently; today this is one example. Your child may simply point or watch the puppet.
