Snoozo plans a family picnic with Zippy, Mum Fern and Dad Moss around a picture plan.

Snoozo spread a picture plan across the table: a cup, a checked napkin and a picnic basket. Mum Fern would prepare the food. Dad Moss would help bring the meal. Zippy wanted a decorating job. Snoozo wanted everything in the right place. “A great family table,” he announced. “With a seat for every koala.” Dad added, “And room for each koala’s ideas.” Snoozo had drawn the napkin very neatly. He had not drawn a space for a changed plan.

Talk together: Look at the picture plan. Which jobs could the children choose, and which jobs need adult help?

Zippy tips an empty basket while a frustrated Snoozo keeps his paws safely beside himself.

Zippy moved the empty basket. It tipped onto its side with a clatter. This was not where Snoozo had planned to put it. His face felt hot. “That is not my plan!” rose in his throat, and he wanted to shove the basket away. He kept his hands close to himself. Dad stayed near. “I’ll help keep everyone safe. No hitting or pushing.” Snoozo was still frustrated. Having a feeling did not mean he had to act on its first instruction.

Talk together: Separate feeling, urge and action: what did Snoozo feel, want to do and actually do?

Snoozo asks Dad Moss for a pause and rests by a window before returning to the plan.

“Dad, I need a pause. Please stay near me,” Snoozo said. They sat by the window. He rested his feet and let his breathing slow at a comfortable pace. Dad listened without rushing him. “I worked hard on that plan,” Snoozo said. “You wanted it to matter,” Dad replied. After a while, Snoozo could think about the basket as well as the frustration. “I’m ready to ask what happened.” He could also have asked for more time.

Talk together: Try a pause request that suits you. What support would help: company, a quiet spot or time?
