Snoozo, Zippy, Mum, Dad and Grandma gather around a wooden workshop table with a toy train, a cup and a box of word-building tiles.

Grandpa Oak’s toy train had stopped at the Word Workshop. Grandma Blossom sorted tiles while Mum Fern, Dad Moss and Zippy opened the workbench. Snoozo arrived with his moon cushion. “Does this train need a nap?” “It needs a word crew!” said Grandpa. “Letters have names; we blend their sounds in words.”

Talk together: Build CAT from left to right. A grown-up can model the three sounds /k/ /æ/ /t/ and blend them into cat. Use the sounds in this word, rather than saying letter names to blend. Ask for help whenever needed.

Grandpa points to three wooden tiles as Snoozo and Zippy smile beside a wooden cat and a green toy train carriage.

Grandpa set a wooden cat beside the first carriage. Snoozo mixed up its tiles. “My cat has turned into act!” Grandpa pointed left to right: C, A, T. He said the sounds slowly, then slid them together. “Cat.” Snoozo rebuilt it. The wooden cat bobbed its head. “Meow means thank you,” Zippy whispered.

Talk together: Rebuild CAT with the shuffled tiles, then blend its sounds again. Notice that the order matters. If a letter is in the wrong place, remove it and try again; the toy cat can wait.

Mum and Zippy point to a dotted route on a large illustrated map while Snoozo and Grandma watch beside the toy train.

Mum unfolded the route to Moon Station, and Zippy followed it with a finger. “This is a map,” Mum said. Snoozo put M first, then A. He paused. “Which sound is at the end?” Grandma helped him hear /p/. He added P and blended map. “A little word can show us the way!”

Talk together: Build MAP. Model /m/ /æ/ /p/, then blend map. Compare CAT and MAP: both have A in the middle, but their first and last sounds differ. Point to each letter as you blend.
