Mira the white rabbit spreads a blue picnic blanket, with Tiko the tortoise at the left and Nila the hedgehog holding a wicker basket at the right.

Mira spread a picnic blanket beneath the tree. Nila brought the basket, and Tiko found a shady spot. “A picnic for three friends!” said Mira. “Let’s make a place for everyone.”

Talk together: Point to each friend once. Can you say one, two, three with a grown-up?

Page 2

The three animal friends sit around exactly three cream plates, one plate in front of each friend; there are no cups yet.

Mira put one plate in front of each friend. Nila touched the plates gently as she counted. “One, two, three. Three friends and three plates!” Each friend had a place of their own.

Talk together: Match each friend to one plate. Does every friend have a plate?

Page 3

Three friends have three plates, but only Mira and Nila have cups; Tiko’s place is missing a cup.

Next came the cups. Mira had one. Nila had one. Tiko looked beside his plate. “Mine is missing!” Two cups were fewer than three friends. They needed one more cup.

Talk together: Who is missing a cup? How many more cups would make one for each friend?
