Tara and Kabir prepare the clubhouse picnic while four friends gather a book, kite, drum and ball.

The neighbourhood club was preparing a picnic. Tara and Kabir had invited everyone to bring a game or an idea. Pip watched from the window while Asha, Ben, Mira and Theo tidied the club cupboard. Each friend carried away one object: a book, a kite, a drum or a ball.

Talk together: Name the four objects. What does “each friend” tell us about the rule?

Tara studies a note and Kabir gathers five clue cards beside the club cupboard.

Then Tara found a note: “Your first picnic challenge is tucked inside the book.” But the friends had already gone to their planning tables. Instead of guessing, Kabir picked up five clue cards they had left behind. “Every object went to one person,” he said. “Let us use the clues.”

Talk together: Why do they need to find the book? Explain using “because”.

Tara reads the clue cards with Kabir while Pip tilts his head beside the four possible objects.

Tara read the cards aloud. “Asha does not have the book or the drum. Ben does not have the book or the ball. Mira does not have the kite or the drum. Theo does not have the book. Asha does not have the ball.” Pip tilted his head. Four friends, four objects, five clues!

Talk together: Pause and solve if you wish. Which three objects are ruled out for Asha?
